Negative effects of agricultural open-channel irrigation system on vertebrate populations in central Mexico

In this study, researchers investigated the impact of small vertebrate mortality in irrigation canals used for agriculture in Mexico. They specifically related the fatalities to canal characteristics, the surrounding landscape, and seasonality. Small mammals and reptiles were the most affected groups. The highest number of fatalities was recorded during the rainy season. Additionally, the researchers found that some species tend to die in certain canal structures and are often found near specific landscape features, information that can be used to guide mitigation strategies.
