We would like to congratulate the Reconecta Project, led by researcher Fernanda Abra, for being one of the winners of the prestigious Whitley Award in 2024!

The Reconecta Project aims to restore canopy connectivity and enable the safe crossing of arboreal animals over highways. To achieve this, 30 canopy bridges were installed along BR-174, in the section that crosses the Waimiri-Atroari Indigenous Land in the Brazilian Amazon. Two different models of bridges were installed at 15 strategic points along the 125 km of the highway, and the use and acceptance of these bridges by various animal species are being monitored with camera traps.

The choice of the Waimiri-Atroari Indigenous Land as the site for the project’s implementation was strategic. The local indigenous community has a long history of concern about the highway’s impacts, monitoring roadkills and controlling nighttime vehicle traffic since 1997. Additionally, they have been making efforts to restore canopy connectivity through the management of tree growth.
