Behavioral state-dependent selection of roads by guanacos

In this study, researchers evaluated the behavior of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in relation to roads. The movement and habitat use of the species were monitored near roads in Monte León National Park, Argentina, using telemetry collars. The study showed that guanacos’ movement differs across different types of roads depending on the behavior they are performing. For feeding, they select areas near paved roads, while for traveling they prefer unpaved ones. Additionally, despite their proximity to roads, the results indicate that they avoid crossing them regardless of their behavior.
