Unravelling unique responses of mammal abundance to road proximity in agricultural landscapes

Information on the impacts of highways at the population level is scarce. With this in mind, researchers investigated the effect of highway proximity and other landscape variables on the abundance of 12 mammal species in the Brazilian Cerrado. The researchers monitored mammals using camera traps near two paved highways. Two species had their abundance negatively affected by the highways, while one was positively affected. All three also showed a high number of roadkill records. For most species, variations in abundance were strongly correlated with habitat quality and connectivity, regardless of roadkill rates.
